Man oh man... I'm finally coming down from my Scott Pilgrim high. Last week was intense! Its about to pick up again due to an advance movie screening, so I figured I should probably go ahead and blog part 1 of all of this. (Yes, there are several more event posts - if you don't like Scott Pilgrim I apologize in advance!)
If you haven't heard, last Tuesday was Criminal Record's "Scott Pilgrim vs Atlanta" party! It was to celebrate the final volume of Scott Pilgrim. For those who don't live in Atlanta, Criminal Records is one of the coolest local shops specializing in CDs, records, comics, collectibles and tons of other awesome stuff... located in the heart of Little 5 points and a great place to catch indie band shows! (I highly recommend stopping in if you are ever visiting Atlanta!)
A couple months ago my friend Lillian who works at Criminal Records and came up with the idea of throwing a Scott Pilgrim book release party and invited me to join the planning committee. There were 6 of us working on this (and sometimes our spouses) - each with different task to tackle. I worked on some of the graphics and display concepts! (You can see more of that further into the post.) There was a lot of work up until the day of the event, and even some nights with hardly any sleep - but it was so worth it! We ended up selling out on all copies of Volume 6, had an amazing photobooth and video game set up - plus we were able to give out advance screening tickets! And there is another event on the way after the screening!! Scott Pilgrim fans in Atlanta are really lucking out! :)
Me and Lillian duking it out before the party starts!
One of the things Lillian and I were super pumped about was dressing up as Knives and Ramona. Lillian put some red highlights in her hair a few days before the event and pulled together an outfit - it all turned out really cool! I think she is going to make Knives' scarf at some point too. As for my Ramona outfit: I have been working slowly on acquiring items for a Ramona Flowers costume since last October, but I never really finished... I ended up putting almost all of those items together for the party though! Unfortunately it was a little lackluster because I was focusing more on the party than myself. I made a subspace purse and a mallet for my outfit - but the mallet wasn't ready in time for the party. Booo! I also thought it was neat that I didn't have to wear Ramona's star ring since I already had a tattoo there... I'll be taking better photos of my complete costume in a few days for Part 2 of my Scott Pilgrim posts. (Part 2 will be about making your own Ramona Flower's costume, and will also have links to buy the extra subspace purses I've made!) Here is me before I ran out the door for the party:
A picture from when we were setting up the "photobooth"... The poster on the right was brought in by the movie promotion company and it was so sweet! I can't remember what this type of poster is called - but it was plastic-y and animated depending on how you looked at it? It had three different poses for Michael Cera to move through while he played guitar. (edit - I was told it is called a lenticular poster by sebmodio on twitter!) You can also see a little pile of signs we made to the left. I did the graphics for those and it was super fun! Here are a few of the things we had printed:
Some images I found online from various photos and recreated them for large printing, others I drew in illustrator based on images from the movie trailer! Plus a little peek at the photobooth concepts... It was so fun to plan all that stuff!
There were more decorations throughout the store...
Sweet banner facing the entrance of Criminal Records...
The employee door turned into a Subspace door!
There also was a large projector screen that we had a playstation hooked up to! People were playing Street Fighter for a while, and then we switched it up to display the movie trailers and then the video game trailer... When trailers weren't on we played a secret copy of the movie's upcoming soundtrack on the store's speakers. (It sounded really good from what I could tell!)
Before the party started, I got my own copy of volume 6. This was my nerdy victory pose - I was so pumped! Hahahah...
One of our first guests to show up was Tony dressed as Gideon! It was my first time meeting Tony and I couldn't stop geeking out over his costume.
Eventually more people showed up and a good bit were in costume - there were a bunch of Ramonas, a few Envys, Scotts, a Kim Pine... probably even more that I missed! I love costumes and dressing up, so I was enjoying spotting them all and trying to get pictures.
Here are a few shots from the photo booth taken by Tim Lampe and Jessie Brown:
Envy, Scott and Ramona costumes
Lillian as Knives Chau and her husband as Lucas Lee! Battling it out! hehehe
Lillian continuing to be fierce as Knives, Tony as Gideon and myself as Ramona! I'm not sure where the prop "knives" came from, but they are pretty funny!
JP and I leveling up!
There were tons of photos taken in the photobooth - this is just a tiny glimpse of what you can go through! Click here to see more! (there are 3 pages full of pics)
While everyone was enjoying the event I tried to hop around and take my own photos to capture the moment - it was so fun to watch how excited everyone was! Here are some pictures of costumes I took while walking around:

We gave out huge movie posters to all the people who dressed up as characters, as well as mini versions of the movie posters, bookmarks and postcards. Then we got out the cakes!
We cut out 100 little toppers for the cake slices - I think they turned out pretty cute! I was hoping for a Ramona slice, but I ended up getting Julie...
The cake was suuuuper delicious - I probably would have gotten two slices if I could have but we blazed through both cakes quickly. My photos probably don't show it - but there were a lot of hungry guests!
The party planning group! We couldn't stop laughing in these photos :)
Left to Right - Myself, Jessie, Emily, Tim, JP, Jason and Lillian!
I had SO much fun working on all of this and made a ton of new friends <3 I think the event was pretty successful and I can't wait for round 2 on August 9th! Thats when we are hosting the advance screening of the movie at the Plaza theater - so expect more pictures!!
By the way, if you picked up tickets to go to the advance screening - be sure you arrive early to make sure you get a seat! There are a lot of people attending and seating arrangements might be tricky.

Stay tuned for the last two parts of this post! Part 2 will be about my Ramona Flowers Costume plus tips on making your own, and Part 3 will be about the epic Premiere we are putting together and other surprises that will follow...! eee ;)
